The purpose of this project was to design a magazine that highlighted an artist, specifically one I had selected in an earlier project. I had to design an original magazine based on my essay about Emilia Ortiz and her journey as an artist, with an analysis of her artworks. I had to design different yet consistent layouts that presented Emilias' artworks all in Indesign. I utilized different grids to play with layouts, and I created patterns and icons that were directly inspired by Emilia's artworks. Combined, I created a magazine that describes Emilia Ortiz's artworks and journey in a way that connects with her artistry.
Connection in the Midst
Before designing the magazine, I researched the artist whom I selected. I chose Emilia Ortiz because she is a Mexican artist like me; she is known for her caricature and surrealist art. I wrote a paper that detailed her journey and her impact on the art world.
Cover Page in the Works
After turning in my research paper and writing peer reviews, I was tasked to design a cover for the magazine I would end up making at the end of the module. I wanted to focus on Emilia for the cover since her art would be addressed in detail within the magazine.
Icons in the Making
As a part of the project, I had to create patterns and icons and incorporate them into the magazine. I analyzed each painting from my research paper and created icons that I believe are iconic to them. For the pattern, I took inspiration from her caricature work.
Layout in the Process
The real challenging part of this project was the layout design. This is my first magazine project, thus I wanted to utilize the grid types I had learned to properly balance the writing and the imagery. Finding unique and impactful layouts was trial and error; thus, I hope to advance my layout design in the future.
Magazine at the Ready
After combining all of these aspects together, I created a simple but personalized layout that focuses on Emilia Ortiz and her artworks. Designing this was a new experience and one that I hope I can learn from to advance my layout design skills.
